imc / ir(r) rating

The IMC Rating, previously known as the IRR (Instrument Rating Restricted), is a restricted version of the full Instrument Rating course. It is a UK-only rating. Meaning it cannot be used in the airspace of another country without prior approval from the appropriate authority.

The IMC Rating permits pilots to fly safely in poor weather conditions, in cloud and fly instrument approaches down to the published minima in the same airspace allowed by the PPL. However many obtain their IMC only to ensure that a flight may safely continue should the pilot inadvertently encounter bad weather conditions en route.

The course consists of a minimum of 15 hours training covering instrument flight, navigation and precision/non-precision approaches. There is one theory exam.

We offer a package for the course, but also have pay-as-you-go options available.

The majority of our students complete the IMC rating to make them eligible for the “Competency Based Instrument Rating”.

PRE-REQUisites

  • As a modular school, you can commit as much or as little time as you wish towards your training. We have many students who fly up to five or six times per week, and many who fly once or twice per week. The more time you can commit, the quicker you will be able complete your training. Average course durations are listed in each course section. All flight training is subject to weather as well as aircraft maintenance requirements, so course durations are just estimates.

  • We offer the IMC course as a 15-hour package, including approach fees. Alternatively, we offer pay-as-you-go rates for all of our fleet if you wish to pay on a flexibile basis.

    Our packages and hourly rates include landing fees at Blackbushe. Approach fees are included in the IMC package, but no the pay-as-you-go rates.

  • You must have 25 hours of experience post PPL issue, however, this may include the IMC rating.

  • You will require a Class 2 / Class 1 medical.

  • At the end of your IMC course you will be recommended by your instructor to take the IMC skill test. As discussed above, the time at which you are ready for this varies between students. As you do not have to pay for your instructor, the skill test is billed seperate. You will be required to pay a private hire hourly rate for the aircraft, and the examiner directly.
