COMPETENCY BASED instrument rating (CBir)
FLIGHT TRAINING
competency based ir (Cbir)
The Competency Based Instrument Rating (CBIR) route is our most popular option for students to gain the Instrument Rating (IR). It is designed for pilots who already have instrument flight experience, such as an IMC Rating holder or someone who has already undertaken instrument training elsewhere.
The CBIR focuses training on ability and prior experience, rather than a fixed syllabus. Our students working along our modular flowchart will meet the requirements and be eligible for the CBIR.
The course commences with an assessment flight to determine how many hours of training are needed. This can be as few as 10 hours if taken in a single. For our MEIR students, a minimum of 15 hours is required.
The CBIR route will issue you with the exact same qualification as a standard Instrument Rating.
More details on our modular flowchart can be found here.

instrument rating (ir)
There are many routes of training available for the Instrument Rating (IR). Most of our students undertake the Competency Based Instrument Rating (CBIR) route, but there are other options available. If you are unsure about which route is best for you, please do not hesitate to contact us, and our Operations Team will be able to provide you with a training plan. For those without prior instrument experience, we offer the full course of training for the Instrument Rating at Blackbushe.
For the Single Engine Instrument Rating (SEIR), the course is 50 hours. For the Multi Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR), the course is 55 hours. For the MEIR, a minimum of 15 hours of the course must be completed in the multi-engine.
MULTI ENGINE OR SINGLE ENGINE IR?
The vast majority of our students training for their Instrument Rating are doing so to be eligible for a future career flying commercially. The vast majority of airlines and operators fly multi-engine aircraft, so our students train for the Multi Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR).
The Single Engine Instrument Rating (SEIR) is more suitable for students who wish to obtain an Instrument Rating for their own recreational flying in single-engine, single-pilot aircraft.
TRAINING AVAILABILITY
Blackbushe Aviation books 6-8 weeks into the future for all training courses. For availability information, or to be added to the waiting list, please contact the Operations Team.
